Too often our students from low-income families and students of color are taught by inexperienced and out-of-field (in a teaching assignment that does not match their endorsement) teachers. In 2014, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) directed every state to create a revised equity plan. Called the Ensuring Equitable Access to Excellent Educators Initiative, the directive is designed to move the country toward the day when every student in every public school is taught by excellent educators.
The Washington State Approved Equity Plan outlines the qualities that define an “excellent educator,” as well as strategies for ensuring that all students have equal access to excellent educators. The plan was approved by the ED on October 22, 2015.
The Educator Equity Data Collection (EEDC) monitors teacher qualifications, including certification, endorsements, teaching assignments, and years of experiences as required by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The data displayed are aggregated based on a Local Education Agency’s current E-Certification data, S-275 and Comprehensive Education Data and Research System (CEDARS) reports, and the Professional Education Standards Board (PESB) Assignment Rules.
