In the 2022 legislative session, Substitute Senate Bill 5933 was passed into law which created the School Seismic Safety Grant Program (SSSGP). The legislature found that a significant number of Washington students in public school districts and state tribal education compact schools attend school in older facilities located in high seismic risk areas. Accordingly, the legislature created a grant program to help school districts and state tribal education compact schools cover the cost of retrofitting or relocating school facilities located in high seismic areas and tsunami zones. The program will also cover the construction of tsunami vertical evacuation structures, where appropriate, as determined by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI).
This program is not currently open to all school districts; it was determined that the initial funding would go to districts on the coast that have high seismic and tsunami risks.
Once the funding is completed for the initial districts, it is anticipated that we will open an application process for other districts to apply. At this time, we do not have a timeframe for this.
