Through the USDA Local Food for Schools (LFS) Cooperative Agreement, OSPI provided 23 unprocessed and minimally processed foods from Washington producers to schools at no cost during the 2023–24 school year. While LFS funding has concluded, OSPI created the initiative as an innovative and sustainable Farm to School solution that would persist past the funding cycle. As such, the initiative will continue indefinitely under a new name: Washington Local Foods (WaLF).
This program supports both schools and local producers by reducing administrative time and resources spent on procurement, ordering, transportation, and other logistics associated with Farm to School efforts.
WaLF Ordering Details: Washington Local Education Agencies (LEAs) that operate the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and participate in the USDA Foods Program are eligible to order WaLF foods once per month during the regular order period and during the surplus order window, when available.
