OLYMPIA—May 1, 2026—On Thursday, five students and an adult school employee were injured in an attack with a knife by another student. One of the injured students is the suspect.

School personnel responded quickly and all the injured individuals are receiving medical care.

Schools are supposed to be sacred spaces, free from violence, where students can focus on learning, engaging with their peers and educators, and pursuing their interests and goals.

Washington state maintains rigorous expectations for school safety, requiring all school districts to implement comprehensive plans that prioritize student and staff safety and well-being. The plans are required to include coordinated emergency preparedness, clear communication systems, and policies that promote safe, supportive learning environments.

Tacoma Public Schools has demonstrated a clear focus on preparedness, coordination, student protection, and a commitment to maintaining safe and secure school communities.

Too often in this country, we see the sacred learning environment disrupted due to violence. I am beyond grateful that all the injuries the victims received in yesterday’s attack were non-life-threatening. I think we all understand the conversation we would be having today if a lethal firearm had been used.

Families, educators, health care providers, community partners, and policymakers work hard every day to support the mental, behavioral, and physical health of our young people.

Yesterday's attack is a powerful reminder that we must sustain and double-down on the policies and support programs that we know work—lives depend on it.
