The CTE Math/Science "Applied" VCODE is for Continuing Career and Technical Educators (CTE) who wish to teach general education math/science, and the Dual Credit "Applied" Math/Science is for teaching courses that provide students the opportunity to earn college credits. The OSPI Professional Certification Department processes the VCODES, and the Washington Applied Mathematics Council (WAMC) works with educators to obtain authorization to teach dual-credit courses. CTE Math/Science "APPLIED" vs. CTE "APPLIED" Math/Science:

An educator can teach general education math/science or dual credit, depending on where the word "Applied" appears in their assignment title. 

  • If "Applied" appears AFTER the subject area, they can teach General Education math/science with a CTE Continuing Certificate. Please review the requirements in the dropdown below.
  • If "Applied" appears BEFORE the subject area, they can teach dual credit courses. Please review the dropdown below for information.

CTE Math/Science "Applied" Requirements and Information

The CTE Math/Science Applied VCODE is for educators holding a Continuing CTE certificate earned through the Plan 2 CTE Business and Industry route (WAC 181-77-041).

CTE teachers who have earned a certificate for the following VCODES are eligible for teaching assignments in general education mathematics, science, biology, chemistry, physics, or earth and space science courses, dependent upon the category on the Continuing CTE certificate.

  • Mathematics applied
  • Science applied
  • Biology applied
  • Chemistry applied
  • Physics applied
  • Earth and Space Science applied

Requirements

  • Must hold a CTE Continuing certificate issued through the Plan 2 CTE Business and Industry route
  • Must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university
  • Must have a related degree in the subject area (Math, Science, Biology, etc.)
  • Must pass the appropriate WEST-E content test
  • Must be employed with a Washington school district
  • Submit paper application (Form 4077)

 Dual Credit Courses

Dual Credit "Applied" Math/Science Requirements and Information

"Applied" Math/Science for Dual Credit or cross-credentialing for students DOES NOT earn a VCODE or a certificate. The OSPI Professional Certificate Department does not authorize teaching dual-credit courses, and changes to certification are not required.

A dual credit course is a rigorous course taught in a college or high school that allows students to earn both high school and college credit.

  • College in the High School
  • Cambridge International
  • International Baccalaureate
  • CTE Dual Credit
