School Reopening Data

As the state and world navigated the COVID-19 pandemic, during the 2020–21 school year, Washington's schools provided instructional delivery in several different modalities. For most of the school year, OSPI required districts to report their mode of instructional delivery – first monthly, then weekly.

The following data are self-reported by each public school district, state-tribal education compact school, and charter school. From January–June 2021, the data were updated weekly to reflect the school or district's instructional model.

Model for Delivering Instruction Data Definitions:
100% Remote: 
  • All Students are receiving instruction remotely
Small Groups and Remote:
  • Targeted students are receiving in-person instruction
  • The majority of students are still receiving instruction remotely
Phase-In:
  • Specific grade-levels/bands are brought back in-person (fully or partially) in a phased approach
  • Other students still receive instruction remotely
  • Could include a hybrid and/or A/B structure for some, but not all students
Partial In-Person for All Students:
  • All students are receiving instruction, at least partially, in-person
  • In this model every student is receiving some level of in-person instruction, but it may not take place every day
  • Could include a hybrid and/or A/B structure
  • A remote option may be available for families opting out of in-person instruction
Typical/Traditional In-Person:
  • All students receive instruction in-person, 5 days per week
  • A remote option may be available for families opting out of in-person instruction
