The McKinney-Vento Act defines homeless children as "individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. The McKinney-Vento Education of Homeless Children and Youth Assistance Act is a federal law that ensures immediate enrollment and educational stability for homeless children and youth.

The federal McKinney-Vento Act requires every school district to designate a liaison responsible for carrying out the duties outlined in the law. These duties can be time consuming, and sometimes challenging, but liaisons like Lluviana serve students experiencing homelessness all across the country. Liaison duties include identifying and enrolling students in homeless situations, making sure they receive the services they are eligible for, and helping them navigate their way through school. But there is much more to being a McKinney-Vento liaison than what is included in the law. As you will see in the film, Lluviana’s day is filled with tasks such as delivering food to families, connecting with community, and most importantly, building meaningful relationships with students.
