Timmie is the dynamic college and career coordinator at Chelan High School. She took on this challenge in 2007 and quickly began the work of rebuilding a program that, once a perceived weakness for the school, is now the envy of schools across the area.
One parent who had students graduate both pre and post Timmie confirms this, “Within two years the center has been transformed. In addition to being a well organized resource and scholarship center, it became a welcoming place for kids and parents to receive encouragement and the specific tools they need to move forward.” Timmie’s impact is evident not only in the testimony of parents, but also in the success of her students. The class of 2009 was offered over 1.3 million dollars in financial aid and scholarships – nearly double the amount of previous classes.
Continuous and relevant communication with parents is one of the hallmarks of Timmie’s new program. Chelan’s special events now include the annual FAFSA night and Scholarship training for parents. Timmie also presents ‘College 101’ at the Senior College Night and organizes college visits throughout the year. Recently, she helped design the district’s first College and Scholarship page for the website.
Chelan’s redesigned College and Career Center is a resource hub that works in tandem with the counseling staff to provide real opportunities for students. Those opportunities are the core of what Timmie strives to accomplish. As a first generation college student herself, Timmie knows just how intimidating the college application process can be, and she is committed to doing whatever it takes to make college an option for every student at Chelan.
As the director of assessment, Frank Phelps simply puts it: “She cares about people. She cares enough that she puts the needs of others before herself . . . Timmie has not earned recognition because she has sought it out. Rather, it has found her through the many people that she has unselfishly helped and influenced. She is as deserving a person as I have ever met.”
Timmie’s areas of expertise include: early childhood education, special education, staff collaboration, post graduate planning, conference presentations, administrative support and data analysis.
